DWE | posted 03-31-2005 01:19 PM ET (US) I understand similar topics like this have been discussed many times before, so please excuse any redundancy. Last fall I attempted, somewhat unsuccessfully, a few minor gel-coat repairs on my 1976 13-Sport with Spectrum Color gel-coat patch paste. The problem I experienced was improper color match. Assuming the entire hull color of my Whaler was Desert Tan, I first used the Desert Tan patch paste, but it was too dark; then, assuming my hull is not Desert Tan, I used the Light Grey patch paste, but it was too light. Finally, I mixed both paste colors to find the closest medium. But still, the match is not perfect. What, exactly, is the true color of my 1976 13-Sport’s hull? And, has anyone else experienced a bad color match with Spectrum Color gel-coat patch paste? Confused, |
Sheila | posted 03-31-2005 02:01 PM ET (US) On the Spectrum website, under 'technical data,' you'll find a document entitled, 'Gel coat color field adjustments.' Your 1976 hull has seen 29 years of uv exposure and you'll probably need to adjust the patch paste to match your boat. |
DWE | posted 04-01-2005 05:29 PM ET (US) Thank you, Sheila, for directing me to the gel-coat color adjustment chart. Mixing and matching colors is what I had to do, before. It is a rather tedious process to find the perfect match, though. At the same time last fall, I completed some gel-coat repairs on my Desert Tan 1988 17-Super Sport Limited, and the appropriate patch paste matched perfectly. I just can’t imagine the gel-coat on my 1976 13-Sport faded that much over the course of 29-years. Even more complex, the cockpit color is darker than the hull color. Maybe the 1976 13-Sport was molded in two different gel-coat colors. Anyone know? |
Tom W Clark | posted 04-01-2005 07:51 PM ET (US) DWE, Your 1976 Sport 13 is Desert Tan on the inside only. The exterior is Outrage Grey. For more on what colors were used on what models, see: I suspect the original colors of your gel coat have changed over the years. It is very difficult to get an exact match without adjusting the gel coat once you get it and test it on your hull. You may even find that different places on your hull differ in color from variations in the exposure to sunlight. It should be noted that Spectrum Color refers to 'Outrage Grey' as 'Light Grey' or 'Lt. Grey' |
